SXSW Preview Guide

We here at South by Southwest love our home grown… home grown movies that is. This year we are proud to present the premiere of Mobius Entertainment’s The Wendell Baker Story co- directed by brothers Luke and Andrew Wilson. The film was written by Luke and co-stars brother Owen Wilson.

“Austin is a big part of the movie,” said brothers Luke and Andrew, “so to have it premiere at SXSW means a lot.”

The comedy tells the tale of a dreamer and misguided entrepreneur (Luke Wilson) who takes his first real job in a retirement hotel upon release from prison. The residents of the hotel aid him to win back his former girlfriend (Eva Mendes). At the same time, he helps the residents stop the hotel’s head nurse (Owen Wilson) from stealing their pensions.

As Luke recalls, “I was driving down I-35 from Dallas to Austin with one note in my head, which was a con artist running an old folks home, and on the way back I had the idea about the driver’s license (scam) for Wendell Baker.” The script developed from that often tedious drive.

The Wendell Baker Story features an all-star ensemble cast that includes Seymour Cassel, Eddie Griffin, and Harry Dean Stanton. In addition, actors-musicians Kris Kristofferson and Billy Joe Shaver have supporting roles.

“Someone always says: ‘well why not do it in Bakersfield’ – or something like that,” noted Luke. “But thank God it worked out,” Andrew added, “because (Texas) really does play a part in the film, and in all of the small roles we got good Texas kind of people. A huge contribution was made by the people from Austin who worked so hard on the movie. We’re glad to have it show in their home town first.”
