“ Why am I doing this?” he said to himself. He shook his head and leaned against an empty rain barrel looking up at the sky. It was a beautiful day in the small town of Dugway.
“So,” said a harsh voice, “We walk away for ten minutes and you’re off in the clouds.” Roy looked down to see a group of men smirking and bumping into each.
“Sorry Mitch.” Roy said, “I was just…”
“Day Dreaming like always.” Mitch’s right hand man, Harry, interrupted, “You’ll never be a great bank robber if you don’t pay attention, Wyatt.”
“ My name’s Roy.” Roy said under his breath.
Mitch walked up and got right in Roy’s face. “Did you say somth’n boy.” Mitch asked. Roy tried not to shake while Mitch’s bad breath filled his face. Harry grabbed Mitch’s arm.
“ If we’re gona rob this here bank, then lets do it.” The rest of the men agreed.
“Right.” Mitch backed off from Roy. Roy breathed a sigh of relief. Turning to his men, Mitch said,“Let the first bank job by the Mitch Jameson gang here by commence.”
The gang dispersed as they approach the bank. The town people ran into the nearest building.
“I hope no one gets hurt.” Roy thought to himself as he approached the door of the bank. A heavy hand fell on his back shoulder.
“ You stay out here and keep watch.” said Harry as he pushed Roy aside and entered the bank. Roy held the door as Mitch and the rest of the 6 men of the gang walked into the building.
“ Reach for the…” BAM! The door shut.
How disappointing. All Roy ever wanted to do for 16 years was rob a bank and now when the good part comes he has to wait out side and keep watch, “Like anything was coming…” Roy though. “ Robben banks are a waste of time and a shame.” Roy smiled as he thought about these words. “Your probably right, mama.” he said to himself.
Suddenly, Roy felt a bump.
“ Sorry son.” A female voice said. Roy looked up and saw a young woman with a bag in her hand.
“ Where are you going?” Roy asked her.
“The bank my friend. Excuse me”. The woman tried to walk around Roy but he stepped in front of her.
“You can’t go in there.” He said
“Why not?” The young woman asked him confused.
“ The bank is being robbed.”
The woman smiled as she leaned closed to Roy’s ear. “ So, that’s why I hear horses.”
Roy looked at the woman confused, and then suddenly realized what she meant. “ The posse.” Roy took out his gun and pointed it at the woman. “ I hate to do this to a lady, but you’ll have to come with me.” The woman shrugged her shoulders and led the way into the bank.
The woman and Roy walked into the bank to found a group of bankers and others laying face down on the ground.
“What the heck are you doing? And who’s the whore?” Mitch asked with a bag of money in one hand and a gun in the other. Roy looked at his captive. She didn’t look like a whore to him. She looked more like a lady, accept for the fact she was wearing pants.
“Wyatt? Are you awake?” Mitch’s voice boomed.
“Posse! Their coming.” Roy said calmly. The activity happening in the bank, stop.
“Ya saw ’em?” Harry asked
“No…the lady said she heard horses.
This was two much for the gang. All eight of the men laughed hardily. Roy turned red.
“What? Ether the whore hears really well or she’s crazy.” Mitch said with tears in his eyes.
Roy wanted to die. He looked around the room and noticed the young woman staring out the window. “Here they are.” She said
“ Get that whore away from the window!” Harry shouted.
The woman smiled. She suddenly whirled around and pulled a gun out of her sleeve. She pointed it straight at Harry’s head. The rest of the gang pointed their guns at the young woman. “Call me Whore one more time and I’ll shoot off one of your ears.”
“You’re not aiming at my ear.” Harry said with a shaky voice.
“ Yes I am.’’ With that, the woman handed her gun to Roy. “ My name’s Maggie and if I were you, I’d be making a plan.”
Harry smiled. “For what?”
“Oh, just the thirty two men on horse back surrounding the bank.” Maggie said pointing at a window.
“ Wyatt, check it out.” Mitch told Roy. Before he could get to the window a voice bloomed from outside.
“ Alright, you thieves! Throw your weapons down and come out with your hands up!”
The gang was in shock. “What do we do Harry?” Mitch asked franticly.
“I don’t know. You’re the leader.” Harry replied.
Roy was scared. He leaned up against the wall and though for a second.” Now your in it, Roy.” He thought to himself, “ Barely 16 and already headed for the grave yard.”
“ What are you doing with these guys?” Roy saw Maggie looking at him. “These type of gangs will only get you in trouble. Besides, Your not a bank robber.” Roy didn’t understand what she was saying, if he wasn’t a bank robber, then who was he.
“ I guess it’s up to me to get us out of this.” Maggie said as she looked around the room. She walked over to Mitch. “ Ya Know friend, there may be a way out of here.”
“How?” Mitch asked not knowing if he believed her.
“Well, in these old banks they use to make old underground escape routes. Now I don’t…sure, this building is probably old enough. Yup, this bank has one.”
Harry jumped up from the corner he was sitting in. “ Your not lying?” He said, “There’s really a way out?”
“Yes.” Maggie said carelessly.
Mitch picked up one of the bank tellers and asked, “ Where’s the escape route?”
“I don’t know!!!!!” the Teller replied.
Mitch pointed his gun at the Tellers head. Roy stepped in.
“ Now I remember, the bank tunnels. Usually they were under the safe.”
Mitch through the Teller to the floor. “Then lets go before the posse decides to come in and get us.”
A voice once again came from outside telling the criminals to come out and take what’s coming to them.
The gang started making their way to the safe. “ Come on Roy!” Harry said as he followed Mitch. Roy looked at Maggie not sure what to do.
“ Some has to take the fall ya'll know.” Maggie piped up.
Mitch turned around. “ And who do you suggest that be?”
“The kid of course.”
Roy felt betrayed. After only knowing this woman for a short time, he felt like he could trust her, but now, he knew he couldn’t.
“Listen, I’ve been know to do a little bounty hunt’en, so I’ll walk out with a gun to the kids back and they’ll think I’ve caught the robber.”
Mitch raised an eyebrow. “What do you get out of it?” he asked.
Maggie winked at Roy then said “ Fame and at least 200 dollars. And you and your gang will get away scott free! You can’t get it any better.”
Mitch scratched the top of his head “Okay.” He said as he pointed his gun at Roy.
“I can’t believe this is happening.” Roy said as he handed his gun to Maggie.
Mitch turned back around and headed for the safe. “Adios!”
“ Good riddance.” Maggie handed Roy his gun. “Come on, we have to hurry.” They walked to the front door. “Follow my lead.”
They came out the front door, running. The posse turned there guns at them then quickly lowed them.
“ Praise the Lord!” Maggie said crying. “ I thought my brother and I were done for!”
A man on a white horse rode up to them. “ Are you okay, Miss?”
Maggie leaned on Roy as she answered the man. “ Yes, but if I was you, I’d hurry. There are still many hostages and children in there.”
“How did you get away?” A man on a black horse asked.
“ They are working on the safe. There’s one thing about Bank robbers, they’re not to bright, and they didn’t leave any guards.”
The posse laughed. “ Well, men. I guess we can get them! Thank you for you help ma’ma.” The man on the white horse said.
“Your Welcome.” Maggie said as she walked off to the side followed by Roy. She walked behind a building where a beautiful red horse was waiting for her.
“ Well,” Maggie said turning to Roy, “ What did you think of my performance?”
“It was great!” Roy said.
“ I should have been an actor, guess we should get out of here.” Maggie jumped on her horse and then held out a hand for Roy. He jumped on the back of the horse behind her.
Bang, bang! Gunfire rang out.
“Ut-oh.” Maggie said. Suddenly, a man turned the corner. It was Mitch.
“You lying whore!” Mitch cry as he lifted his gun and pointed it at Maggie. The red horse turned around and ran away.
“OUCH!” Roy cried. Was he shot? He didn’t even hear the gun. He looked down at his shoulder. “Blood!”
Roy was out cold.
When he came to, he realized he was lying on a blanket next to a river. Then he heard a voice.
“ You definitely was not meant for Bank robbing. You’re too smart for that. No, you’re a train robber, like yours truly, I can see. If you want, I can show you. Teach you everything I know. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth your while.”
Roy laid on the ground, looking up at the sky. It was pure blue. “Who is this angel giving me an opportunity?” He though.
“ What’s your answer, friend?” the heavenly voice asked.
“Yes,” Said Roy, “I’ll do it.”
Maggie leaned her head over Roy’s. “Good…Now get your rest, you need to heal.”
With that, Roy fell back to sleep.
